Description

Engraving of the skeleton of Hyaenodon cruentus from the Oligocene of S. Dakota. Despite the name, Hyaenodons weren't related to hyenas; they were creodonts, a more primitive form of carnivorous mammals than the modern Carnivora (bears, wolves, cats, weasels, etc).

This is a copyright-expired image from "A Guide to the Fossil Mammals and Birds in the Department of Paleontology in the British Museum" (1904).
